Summary of Duties:
Washington State University College of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences is seeking a Chair for the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The Chair will serve as a catalyst to promote inter- and intra-departmental collaborations within the College and University. The Chair will support innovation and entrepreneurship within the research mission of the College and provide strategic and operational leadership to achieve the vision, mission, and goals of the Department, College, and University.
Reporting to the Dean and serving on the Executive Committee, the Chair will be responsible for leading a world-class, research-focused department and for maintaining an outstanding, externally funded research program that generates in excess of $10M annually. Faculty members within the department conduct basic and translational research in critical areas of pharmaceutical and toxicological sciences, addressing a variety of major health disorders including inflammatory, cardiovascular, and infectious diseases, and cancer using in vitro and in vivo models. Research approaches of our faculty include computational pharmacology and molecular modeling, interindividual variability in drug metabolism, disposition and toxicity, pediatric- and physiologically-based pharmacokinetic modeling, pharmacogenomics, and drug discovery and medicinal chemistry.
The Department supports the training of students in the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) program, including teaching the concepts of the pharmaceutical sciences within the curriculum, and provides graduate student training in programs that lead to the PhD and PharmD/PhD degrees in Pharmaceutical Sciences and Molecular Medicine. The Department offers a popular summer undergraduate research program that is funded by the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics. The Chair will be responsible for leading additional growth in the Department’s signature research areas and for enhancing collaborative research throughout the WSU Health Sciences campus. The Chair will support academic programs for professional pharmacy students and graduate students, as well as teaching and training opportunities for postdoctoral fellows.
The position requires excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to unite diverse groups of scientists, students, and staff to advance the common goals of the Department, College, and University. The successful candidate will be a strong leader with a proven track record in an area of research within or related to the pharmaceutical sciences, a clear understanding of the complexities of leading an academic department, and the ability to lead growth and development of the department.
The responsibilities and duties of the Chair include those described below:
-Provide leadership to achieve the highest possible level of excellence in the scholarship, teaching, and service activities of the department,
-Prepare and implement a 5-year plan for departmental growth in scholarly activities, funding, and graduate education,
-Support the mission and strategic goals of the college and University through programmatic decision-making,
-Work collegially with other chairs and administrators within the College and with colleagues on the WSU Health Sciences campus and across the WSU system to support and expand collaborative research, toward the goal of increasing multi-investigator awards,
-Communicate the goals of the Department internally and externally, and encourages faculty engagement, participation, collegiality, and innovation.
-Work with College administrators in developing the Department’s academic programs, within the mission of the College,
-Support departmental faculty members in their efforts to secure NIH and other grant funding,
-Assume a leadership role in developing T32 NIH training grant proposals within the College and across the health science campus, and in supporting submission of proposals targeting multi-investigator funding mechanisms, such as the NIH P01,
-Adhere to the principles of academic governance, such as college and university policies regarding promotion and tenure, and annual and intensive performance evaluations,
-Keep departmental faculty members informed of plans, activities, expectations, and policy and procedural changes of the Department, College, and University,
-Work with the Dean and Associate Dean for External Relations to establish a plan for engaging with external constituencies,
-Work with the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs regarding curricular planning and development, enrollment, and coordinating efforts with departmental faculty,
-Identify, recruit, hire, and retain outstanding faculty from diverse backgrounds,
-Maintain and enhance diversity amongst the department’s faculty, staff, and students,
-Be receptive to questions, complaints, grievances and suggestions from faculty and staff members of the department, and from students, and take appropriate actions as required and in accordance with the policies and rules of the University,
-Systematically seek the advice and input of departmental faculty, hold regular department meetings to discuss operational and professional needs, and ensure that departmental faculty are informed of University actions affecting them in a timely fashion,
-Work with faculty members to develop and implement plans for scholarship, teaching, and service,
-Serve as a faculty mentor and appoint mentoring committees for the career development of faculty members,
-Ensure active participation of departmental faculty on college committees, the admissions processes, and in other service activities of the College,
-Encourage ethical, professional conduct across the Department, and
-As a member of the faculty, the Chair will participate as appropriate in the teaching mission of the College, maintain an active, extramurally—funded research program, and engage in service activities at the College, University, and professional levels.
-Implement and support College and University policies and rules within the department,
-Allocate and manage the departmental budget and ensure compliance with grant, legislative, and institutional guidelines,
-Establish expenditure priorities, subject to the policies established by the university, and be responsible for articulating the relationship between the budget and the department’s strategic plan,
-Maintain general responsibility for departmental facilities and equipment in accordance with campus and university rules and regulations,
-Establish teaching schedules within the College’s PharmD and graduate curricula in consultation with departmental faculty, appropriate associate deans, and the office of student services, and assign faculty to meet the needs of the curriculum,
-Supervise time commitments and work assignments of departmental faculty and staff, and
-Collaborate with staff responsible for programmatic assessment and participate in all self-study, accreditation, and regulatory processes.
Applicants must possess a PhD, or equivalent degree, within the broad area of Pharmaceutical Sciences, or a related discipline, with scholarship commensurate with appointment at the rank of tenured Professor.
