The Kaczorowski lab in the Jackson Laboratory is seeking a highly-motivated, talented individual with experience in molecular and cell biology for a Research Assistant II/III position. The successful candidate will be working on a project that will focus on identifying novel genetic factors underlying disordered sleep associated with Alzheimer’s disease using massively parallel reporter assays (MPRA) and advanced genome editing tools. This role requires strong experience in cell biology, molecular biology and strong hands-on skills, critical in protocol development and implementation. Prior experience with cell cultures and CRISPR/Cas Genome Editing and an educational background in genomics of neurobiology are preferred.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Research Assistant II:
    • Isolate DNA and RNA, QC samples, construct and QC NGS libraries.
    • Proposes alternative research methods, techniques and initiatives demonstrating knowledge of other scientific areas and related research
    • Demonstrates scientific knowledge and analytical skills to monitor, modify, and design the research process. Designs, modifies, and troubleshoots highly specialized equipment.
    • Analyzes and resolves variations in complex tests, experiments and procedures; designs and implements modifications and changes to techniques, procedures and quality control measures
    • Performs cell culture experiments, while maintaining a sterile cell culture environment and equipment, and following all safety protocols.
    • Collects tissue from mice.
    • Collects and analyzes experimental data. Keeps clear records of experiments in a lab notebook and electronically.
    • Is collaborative and supports other projects, as needed.
    • Is organized, responsible, and reports results clearly and efficiently to supervisor.
  • Research Assistant III:
    • Isolate DNA and RNA, QC samples, construct and QC NGS libraries start. Troubleshoot to solve problems as they arise.
    • Proposes alternative research methods, techniques and initiatives demonstrating knowledge of other scientific areas and related research
    • Demonstrates scientific knowledge and analytical skills to monitor, modify, and design the research process. Designs, modifies, and troubleshoots highly specialized equipment.
    • Analyzes and resolves variations in complex tests, experiments and procedures; designs and implements modifications and changes to techniques, procedures and quality control measures
    • Performs cell culture experiments, while maintaining a sterile cell culture environment and equipment, and following all safety protocols.
    • Collects tissue from mice.
    • Collects and analyzes experimental data. Keeps clear records of experiments in a lab notebook and electronically.
    • Proposes alternative research methods, techniques and initiatives demonstrating knowledge of other scientific areas and related research.
    • Independently expands scope of literature search to support and/or propose alternative experimental methods, procedures and/or techniques.
    • Gathers information to prepare budget for acquisition of supplies and equipment.
    • Leads multiple, concurrent projects; collaborates with others; instructs others in carrying out experiments.
    • Understands research goals thoroughly; can instruct and inform others about past and future research directives. Also coordinates with outside collaborators to open new avenues of research.
    • The RA III may have direct supervisory responsibilities and is accountable to insure the effective training and development program for assigned personnel.
    • Train laboratory staff members in new and existing SOPs.

Requirements:

  • Research Assistant II:
    • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences or related discipline OR 3 – 6 years of directly related experience in a Laboratory setting.
    • Experience with basic molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, etc.).
    • Competency in cell culture and/or CRISPR/Cas Genome Editing methods. Training is provided.
    • Mouse handling and husbandry skills desired. Training is provided.
    • Demonstrated ability in development of research protocols.
    • Demonstrated success in coordinating and/or conducting multiple, concurrent projects.
    • Ability to interact with all individuals in a productive, professional and positive manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program.
    • Established understanding of good safety practices and a demonstrated history of safe conduct.
    • Self-motivated with the ability to organize time effectively, demonstrated ability to manage details.
    • Computer skills for data documentation, analysis, and presentation (Word, Excel, PowerPoint or equivalents) are required. Coding skills (R, Matlab, or equivalent) are a plus.
    • Ability to work flexible shifts if needed(evening/week-end/holiday).
  • Research Assistant III:
    • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in biological sciences or related discipline OR 6+ years of directly related experience.
    • Advanced molecular biology techniques, including NGS library preparation.
    • Experience with cell culture and/or CRISPR/Cas Genome Editing methods
    • Advanced mouse handling, husbandry skills and biomethods. Training is provided.
    • Ability to interact with all individuals in a productive, professional and positive manner to enhance the outcome of the goals of the research program.
    • The ability to work in a demanding, fast paced, team-oriented environment, while maintaining a high-level of professionalism.
    • Computer skills for data documentation, analysis, and presentation (Word, Excel, PowerPoint or equivalents) are required. Coding skills (R, Matlab, or equivalent) are a plus.
    • Demonstrated success in conducting multiple, concurrent projects.
    • Demonstrated team player with professional, positive attitude and willingness to be flexible.
    • Demonstrated ability to positively influence the behavior of subordinates and teammates -  previous training or supervisory experience preferred.
    • Ability to work flexible shifts if needed (evening/week-end/holiday).
