Brown University’s Robert J. and Nancy D. Carney Institute for Brain Science and Division of Biology and Medicine seek a Facility Director for its Alzheimer’s and Related Dementias Fluid Biomarkers Laboratory. The Facility Director is responsible for the establishment and oversight of day-to-day operations of this new research resource. The Facility will primarily support clinical research (including clinical trials) and fundamental discovery projects related to Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias across Brown University. The Director will be proficient in a range of protein, nucleic acid, and metabolite assays, as well as basic molecular biology techniques, including Western blots, immunoassays, and protein and nucleic acid preparations.


The Director will lead the establishment of the facility, in collaboration with faculty leaders, including selecting and purchasing equipment, establishing robust workflows and data/sample management and tracking, and establishing reliable assays benchmarked against international standards. The Director will be expected to carry out assays, as well as manage technical staff who perform assays. In collaboration with faculty leadership, the Director will develop a sustainable financial model for the facility, based on user fees, grants, and other income, that also supports growth of the facility as research needs dictate.


The Director will be responsible for staying current on biomarker discovery research and assay technology, including reading literature and attending relevant scientific and technical conferences. The Director will advise faculty leadership in dementia research on updates to the facility’s capabilities or processes required to maintain state of the art output that continues to support and catalyze outstanding impactful research. Director will provide regular reports on facility throughput, quality assurance, community needs, and financial health of the facility.


Director will conduct outreach to the Brown community to understand the needs of research labs and ensure that facility capabilities meet customer needs. Relationships with individual laboratories will include both fee-for- service relationships, as well as grant-funded collaborative discovery research projects.




Education and Experience


Bachelor’s degree required in chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, immunology, neuroscience, or other appropriate field plus 8-12 years of directly related experience. PhD or Master’s degree preferred.


Research experience in Alzheimer’s disease, neurodegeneration, and/or neuroimmunology required.


Experience with human subjects research and human research protections required.


Experience handling, managing, and storing human fluids (blood, cerebrospinal fluid) preferred.


Experience with establishing high-throughput assay platforms is preferred


Or, equivalent combination of education and experience.


Job Competencies


Proficiency required in a range of protein, nucleic acid, and metabolite assays, as well as basic molecular biology techniques, including Western blots, immunoassays, and protein and nucleic acid preparations.


Possesses a willingness and ability to support a diverse and inclusive campus community
