We are looking for a highly motivated, creative, well-trained, meticulous, and ambitious postdoctoral fellow to lead studies on pain in the laboratory of Brian Wainger, MD, PhD at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. Our lab is dedicated to developing therapies for treating sensory and motor neuron diseases, in particular pain and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. We use a complementary set of tools including high-content imaging, patch and multi-electrode array recording, calcium imaging, iPSC modeling, gene editing, bulk and single-cell RNA sequencing, and analysis of human tissue and samples from the MGH clinics and national repositories.
We have recently developed a high-content calcium imaging platform that provides single-cell response resolution, liquid handling to apply multiple longitudinal stimuli, and automated data analysis. We have used this for several novel applications, including unbiased identification of inflammatory pain mediators and screening for blockers of nociceptor activation. We believe that this novel technique offers exciting possibilities for understanding pain mechanisms and developing new pain treatments. It would best be applied in combination with traditional patch clamp electrophysiology, in vivo pain models, and genomic analyses. We also will be expanding a pain gene therapy program in our group.

The candidate should have a doctoral degree, strong research background, and initiative to lead projects. The ideal candidate would have experience in physiology (patch clamp and calcium imaging), pain animal models, programming in R and statistical knowledge sufficient for handling datasets and addressing different variance components for large scale experiments (phenotypic screens). Also relevant would be experience in stem cell biology and bioinformatic analyses.
Our lab is active within Massachusetts General Hospital, the Broad Institute, Harvard Program in Neuroscience, and Harvard Stem Cell Institute. We also have several leading academic and industry collaborations. The candidate will be closely involved in and present at all these forums. The position is for at least two years and is fully funded. Postdoctoral fellows are supported by skilled research assistants.
