University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC)

The Department of Psychiatry is seeking a basic and/or translational neuroscientist with an interest in the behavioral and neurobiological aspects of stress, depression, and resilience. The Department brings together scientists and clinicians from different disciplines and departments who study neural and behavioral processes and how these relate to the etiology and treatment of psychiatric disorders, including depression and anxiety. Faculty will be expected to transfer and maintain an active competitively funded research program in the neuroscience of emotional disorders, with considerable support provided from the department. The successful candidate will have a PhD, and/or MD/MD, Ph.D or equivalent degree in a relevant area of neuroscience, neurobiology or biomedical sciences, and with a track record of active NIH funding. The department has very strong NIH funded basic and clinical research programs in brain disorders and clinical translational research, with particularly strong focus in depression, neuroimaging, women’s mental health, and addiction. In addition, we host a post mortem brain bank focused on the neurobiology of suicide.  Further, we support a NIH funded P50 Center on the molecular basis of alcohol use and two T32 training grants. There is a strong, collaborative neuroscience presence campus – wide, including the departments of anatomy and cell biology, physiology, neurology and psychology.  Preference will be given to candidates who can bring a well-established research program to the department, preferably in the areas related to the neurocircuitry, behavioral and molecular aspects of depression and resilience with an interest and track record of bridging between basic neurobiology and translational clinical neuroscience. The hire will be expected to include modest levels of teaching. Inquiries and requests for more information may be directed to pradhan4@uic.edu.
