The Director (LSM2) will provide financial, operational, and scientific/technical leadership for a world-class TMS- and EEG-focused human research facility located in the Stanford Neurosciences Building on the Stanford University campus. The mission of the Koret Human Neurosciences Community Laboratory is to provide access to state-of-the-art clinical-grade EEG and TMS equipment housed in custom-designed test rooms, as well as a suite of four further test rooms that can be used to perform neuroscience research with human participant volunteers. The Human Neuroscience Community Laboratory will complement world-class clinical operations at the Stanford University hospital, permitting non-clinical applications to be explored by the research community.

The individual in this position will provide methodological expertise to guide the development of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and electroencephalography (EEG) research projects conducted at the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute. This person would have an MD or a PhD degree and significant TMS/EEG experience. The position will construct TMS and EEG safety guidelines and ensure that all IRB applications for TMS or EEG projects at Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute comply with these guidelines. The scientist in this position will contribute expertise to the construction of regulatory documents involving TMS studies. This position will provide hands-on training to researchers interested in running TMS and EEG studies as well as providing materials to educate researchers in both the research and clinical applications of TMS and EEG. This position will provide overall management of the scheduling and usage of testing rooms and equipment in the Koret Human Neurosciences Community Laboratory.

The Director reports to the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute Assistant Director for Neuroscience Community Labs with scientific direction from the Institute Faculty Directors.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Under faculty oversight committee supervision, construct safety guidelines for transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) studies conducted at the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute.
  • Consult with research groups interested in setting up TMS experiments to discuss optimal TMS parameters, stimulation targets and treatment schedules for these projects.
  • Support the development of IRB protocols and grant proposals for TMS studies.
  • Educate members of Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute in the research and clinical applications of TMS.
  • Provide hands-on training to members of the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute in the use of the MagVenture TMS system with Axilum Robotics TMS-Cobot and Localite neuro-navigation software. Setting up and maintaining TMS and neuro-navigation systems.
  • Under faculty oversight committee supervision, develop best practice guidelines for EEG studies conducted at the Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute.
  • Consult with research groups interested in setting up EEG experiments discussing optimal EEG recording parameters, experimental designs and statistical evaluations.
  • Support the development of IRB protocols and grant proposals for EEG studies.
  • Educate members of Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute in the research and clinical applications of EEG-based approaches.
  • Provide hands-on training to members of Wu Tsai Neurosciences Institute in the use of the EGI NetStation 128-ch EEG system and associated stimulus generation hardware and software. Provide support for E-Prime and open-source packages for EEG data analysis.
