A Postdoctoral Research position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Marina Guizzetti, Department of Behavioral Neuroscience at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).
The main research interest of Dr. Guizzetti’s laboratory is the identification of novel mechanisms of astrocyte-neuron interactions involved in neuronal plasticity in the developing and adult brain. We are particularly interested in the effects of alcohol exposure on astrocyte-specific gene expression and gene translation and how these changes alter normal brain development, potentially through alterations of the brain extracellular matrix (ECM). The successful candidate will be involved in the planning, execution, and analysis of studies utilizing cutting edge molecular and genetic tools in a dynamic working environment. Activities will include implementation of the Translating Ribosome Affinity Purification (TRAP) procedure, collection of astrocyte specific nuclei by Fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS), and multiplexed Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH) imaging using RNAscope. Additional opportunities include involvement in the Portland Alcohol Research Center (PARC) studying effects of long-term drinking on astrocyte dysfunction and alterations of the brain ECM.
The Department of Behavioral and System Neuroscience at OHSU offers a dynamic and stimulating environment with a focus on alcohol and drug abuse research and the neuroscience of behavior. The department hosts three training grants including one on the biological basis of alcoholism. The Department of Behavioral Neuroscience and the PI of the lab are committed to ensure that graduate students, post-docs, and research staff are treated with dignity and respect and understand that diversity creates an environment conducive to the development of excellence in research and novel ideas.
