An NIH-funded post-doctoral fellowship position is available immediately in the laboratory of Dr. Shaoping Hou at the Marion Murray Spinal Cord Research Center (MMSCRC) and Department of Neurobiology & Anatomy, Drexel University College of Medicine (DUCOM). This project will use a rat model to study cardiovascular disorders after spinal cord injury (SCI). We will explore whether combining transplantation of neural progenitor cells with exercise training reconstitutes central sympathetic regulation to improve cardio-electric activity, hemodynamics, and autonomic dysreflexia after SCI. The studies will employ a wide range of neuroscience and cardiovascular techniques including SCI animal models, cell transplantation, axon regeneration, telemetric ECG and hemodynamic recordings, transsynaptic neuronal tracing, human iPSC differentiation, DREADDs, passive exercise training, pharmacological interventions, and molecular biology as well as histology.

The candidate should have strong interests in autonomic dysfunction and experience in working with rodent central nervous or cardiovascular system, who is highly motivated and enthusiastic and is able to work independently. The post-doctoral fellow will work on neuro-cardiovascular experiments, data analysis, writing manuscripts, preparing fellowship grants (though salary support is guaranteed), and helping mentor students and technicians. This position enables the post-doc to acquire comprehensive research training in post-SCI cardiovascular areas for pursuing higher academic goals in the future.

Requirements for applicants:

  • Have a Ph.D. in neuroscience/cardiovascular or related disciplines
  • Basic skills in animal surgery, histology and microscopy
  • Have a good publication record, written and spoken English proficiency
  • Although prefer 0-3 years of postdoctoral experience, we will also consider those beyond the requirement possessing related specialties, such as electrophysiology

The MMSCRC and Department of Neurobiology & Anatomy at DUCOM provide an outstanding academic environment for gaining training in neuroscience/spinal cord injury research (https://drexel.edu/medicine/about/departments/neurobiology-anatomy/research/spinal-cord). The position will be available until filled. Salary will be based on NIH scale commensurate with experience and capability. Interested applicants are invited to submit a single PDF that includes curriculum vitae, personal statement (research experience and interests), and contact information for three references to Dr. Shaoping Hou (sh698@drexel.edu).
