HJF is seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow (Sleep, Translational Therapeutics, Traumatic Brain Injury) to support the Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine (CNRM) located at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD. HJF provides scientific, technical and programmatic support services to CNRM.

Responsible for initiating and carrying out research projects in collaboration with a research team, under the direction of Dr. Regina Armstrong. This position will conduct research in experimental models to screen therapies for sleep disorders and other persistent symptoms associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and related clinical conditions.

Responsibilities:

  1. Assists in designing, developing, executing, and implementing scientific research and/or development. (30%)
  2. Performs highly skilled and specialized laboratory research utilizing and designing experimental protocols which will involve specialized procedures such as sleep behavior and electrophysiological (EEG/EMG) studies, animal injections, and stereotaxic surgery. (30%)
  3. Independently develops and troubleshoots new laboratory procedures to expand research capabilities within the lab group. (10%)
  4. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories to potential inventions and products. (10%)
  5. Performs data analysis and statistical comparisons to interpret experimental results. Prepares data for presentations at scientific meetings and for publication in journals. (10%)
  6. Collects and handles samples and keeps detailed records of experiments. Trains and supervises technical staff. Coordinates with other technical and professional staff. (10%)
  7. May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of appropriate scientific area; ability to conduct experiments and to analyze and interpret data.  Ability to work independently and teach techniques and protocols to others.

Minimum Education: Doctoral degree in neuroscience or related field is required.

Minimum Experience/ Training Requirements: 0-5 years of relevant work experience required.

Work Environment: Depending upon specific study requirements, evening, holiday, or weekend work may occasionally be required. Set in a laboratory work environment.

Travel Requirements: As appropriate to present results at conferences and attend similar types of research meetings or training relevant to position requirements.

Background/Security: Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Tier I investigation/Public Trust and a Common Access Card (CAC).
