Postdoctoral fellowship – in sleep and aging disorders

The Sleep Disorders Lab is looking for an enthusiastic Postdoctoral Fellow with a background in neuroscience or physiology. Our laboratory investigates the neuronal mechanisms underlying age-related increase of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) prevalence, gender differences in OSA and how OSA contribute to age-related cognitive deficits and neurodegeneration. These research lines are well integrated and provide abundant opportunities for training and career development.  Responsibilities involve recording of upper airway muscle activity during sleep and wakefulness, neuronal tracing and/or chemogenetics, development of specialized in situ hybridization and immunohistochemical protocols, microscopy and image analyses, confocal imaging, analyses and synthesis of findings for reports and publications. The candidate will work with a research team in Sleep Disorders lab in the department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics, an integral part of a large and active neuroscience community in Albany, which includes SUNY Albany, Wadsworth Center, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and the Neural Stem Cell Institute.

-PhD with a strong background in systems neuroscience or neurobiology, ideally sleep and/or aging

-Excellent analytical skills, critical thinking, and scientific curiosity

-Proficiency in microscopy, image analyses, in situ hybridization and/or immunohistochemistry 

-Proficiency in rodent stereotaxic surgery is desirable

- Experience in electrophysiology is a plus

-Excellent organizational skills and dedication to teamwork and collaboration

-Excellent skills in written and spoken English
