JOB SUMMARY

Dr. Ido Davidesco at the University of Connecticut (UConn), Neag School of Education, seeks to hire a full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate for a newly funded NSF Discovery Research preK-12 project.

This project focuses on fostering computational thinking through neural engineering activities in high school biology classes. Through a month-long curriculum unit, students will measure their own muscle and brain activity with wearable sensors. Students will then analyze the data and design a brain-computer interface to turn neural signals into real-world output (e.g., a mechanical claw controlled by brain activity). The curriculum will be supported by a web-based instructional application, Ph.D. students and postdocs acting as science mentors, and a professional development program for teachers. This is a collaborative project between UConn and Columbia University’s School of Engineering.

UConn’s Neag School of Education consistently ranks among the top 20 public graduate schools of education in the nation. The interdisciplinary and cross-institutional nature of this project will produce a unique setting for the professional development of the postdoctoral research associate. The combined exposure to learning sciences, educational technology, and engineering education will provide the postdoc with a unique mentoring experience and excellent preparation for their future career.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will be involved in all aspects of the design and development process, including co-designing curriculum with teachers, supporting the implementation of the curriculum in classrooms, coordinating research and design activities across the participating institutions, and developing conference presentations and manuscripts. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will also help oversee the development of the instructional application and design a professional development program for teachers and science mentors.
