The First Review Date for this job is: 3/9/2021

Departmental Overview

The Innovative Genomics Institute (IGI) is a multidisciplinary research institution focused on genome engineering and potential applications in agriculture, microbiology and biomedicine. It is a joint venture between UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, with the administrative operations located on the Berkeley campus. This position is located at the UC Berkeley campus.

The IGI is presently seeking highly motivated Staff Research Associates (SRAs) to conduct research towards clinical translation of genetic therapies for neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's and Huntington's Disease. This work will be performed as part of a team effort within the Center for Translational Genomics (CTG) at UC Berkeley. Specific goals will be the evaluation of new genome editing enzymes as potential new therapies, the improvement of existing therapeutic approaches, the assessment of ex vivo genome editing outcomes in human neuronal stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs), and the evaluation of the impacts of procedures on the edited NS/PCs.

The Staff Research Associates will also collaborate with IGI investigators at UCB, UCSF, UCLA and other IGI-affiliated universities in the use of genome editing to treat neurological disorders.

Responsibilities

The Staff Research Associate (SRA) will provide support to maintain, operate and quality control the laboratory instruments. The SRA will also lead workstreams involving a variety of techniques in the field of molecular biology, notably the establishment of NS/PC cultures, and the implementation and analysis of CRISPR screenings. The SRA works under the general supervision of the facility manager and offers guidance and insight to other SRA and student workers. The SRA will need to possess excellent oral and written communication skills, a team focused mentality, and the ability to work independently and troubleshoot their own experiments. Advanced troubleshooting of experiments experience is a preferred. The SRA must adhere to all campus and Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) policies/procedures.

Key Responsibilities include:

• Under supervision, incumbent performs a limited variety of repetitive but highly specialized laboratory experimental procedures in field of genome editing.

• Establish and troubleshoot stem cell (hESC, hiPSC), primary neuron cell culture and cell neuronal stem cell/progenitor cell, transformed cells and mixed cell culture lines.

• Incumbent will typically perform a wide variety of standard repetitive procedures without detailed technical supervision, in the innovative field of genome editing receiving genome editing reagents from diverse sources and conducting and troubleshooting ex vivo delivery of genome editing reagents

• The incumbent will perform evaluation of genome editing experiments by next-gen sequencing, flow cytometry, and other assays

• The incumbent will also modify, vary or adapt standard procedures to meet the needs of genome editing projects, or improve tests that are unsatisfactory, and after studying available literature, analyze and alter conditions under which determinations are made to evaluate new genome editing enzymes as potential new therapies.

• The incumbent will also acquire and apply a body of knowledge and skill in conducting research towards clinical translation of genetic therapies for neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's and Huntington's Disease.

• Under supervision, conduct and troubleshoot ex-vivo delivery of genome editing reagents

• Quantitate and evaluate genome editing screening results in mammalian cells

• Recording data, performing data analysis and compile results for distribution to diverse researchers, and CTG staff

• Performing miscellaneous tasks required to operate the facility (maintaining equipment, etc)

• Ensuring Lab efficiency by coordinating tasks with CTG staff

Required Qualifications

• Experience in a wet lab, specifically with a focus on neuronal tissue culture and genetic manipulation of mammalian cells

• At least two years of experience setting up/troubleshooting Primary Neuron cultures, Neuronal Stem cell, Progenitor cell cultures, transformed cells, and mixed neuronal cell culture

• Experience with genetic manipulation of mammalian cells

• Experience with ex vivo delivery of genome editing reagents

• Ability to keep proper industry-standard records

• Ability to be cooperative and team-oriented

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail

• Strong ability to efficiently work in a diverse group

• Strong ability to maintain external collaborations with researchers

• Excellent oral and written communication skills

• B.S. or equivalent international degree in the Biological Sciences, such as Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or a related discipline or equivalent combination of eductaion and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D., M.S.,or equivalent international degree in the Biological Sciences, such as Molecular Genetics, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Bioengineering, or a related discipline.

• Knowledge and experience with the development of genetic and/or cell-based therapies

• Knowledge and experience with the development and improvement of genome editing tools
