Job Details

The laboratory of Dr Gary Steinberg (Department of Neurosurgery, Stanford) is seeking highly motivated postdoctoral researchers to understand and enhance the mechanisms of brain repair in rodent models of stroke using stem cells or optogenetic stimulation. We have openings in these main research areas:

  1. Investigate the role of inflammation on brain damage and recovery after stroke and how this is modified by transplanted stem cells.
  2. Investigate neuronal activity changes during post-stroke recovery using optogenetics and live calcium imaging.
  3. Investigate the mechanisms of post-stroke recovery using genetic mouse models, gene profiling, and gene transfer techniques to identify and modulate candidate molecules.

Applicant qualifications

For all projects, applicants must have:

  • A PhD or MD/PhD in neuroscience, immunology, or biochemistry.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (both oral and written).
  • Ability to work independently as well as cooperatively with a team.
  • Experience with animal surgery, molecular biology, RNAseq, cell culture, and confocal microscopy would be an asset.

In addition:

  • For applicants interested in the immunology project, a strong immunology background, an interest in neuroinflammation, and competence in flow cytometry are required. Neuroscience experience is desirable but not necessary.
  • For applicants interested in the neuronal activity project, expertise in calcium imaging, strong mathematical and programming skills using Matlab, R or Python are required. Expertise in rodent imaging and optogenetics is highly desirable.
  • For applicants interested in the candidate molecule project, expertise in molecular biology and gene manipulation (e.g. CRISPR) is required, and experience with stem cells is highly desirable.
