Research Pharmacologist / Research Faculty-Psychiatry

The VA Portland Health Care System and the Department of Psychiatry, Oregon Health & Science University invite applications for a Research Pharmacologist and Faculty member focusing on receptor pharmacology and signal transduction systems as they pertain to neuroscience. This is for a senior role within a pre-existing and well-established laboratory and will be associated with substantial research independence that will further increase commensurate with success in obtaining additional independent funding.  We use recombinant receptors and ion channels and their polymorphisms in radioligand binding and fluorescence localization assays, as well as second messenger systems including adenylyl cyclase, inositol phosphate turnover, and mitogenesis assays to understand mechanisms involved in drug actions. Additionally we characterize drug-neurotransmitter transporter and vesicular monoamine transporter interactions using uptake, binding and release assays. Drug-induced changes in extracellular vesicle cargo and membrane proteins are also a focus of the lab.  Candidates with familiarity in at least some of these assays will be prioritized.  Our work supports the discovery and development of molecular mechanisms for new and approved medications of interest to NIH and the FDA, and of potentially toxic substances of interest to the DEA. This position will manage the workflow, experimental results, and the reports to funding agencies in a lab of approximately 15 scientists, including graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, MD and PhD investigators, research assistants/associates and statisticians. Candidates are expected to develop an independent research program on the molecular pharmacology and function of receptors of interest to them, and to apply for independent funding at the national level as their own projects mature. Additionally, the successful candidate will be encouraged to seek VA Merit Review eligibility.  This is a VA-salaried position with excellent retirement, health, and other benefits, and the successful candidate will satisfy the requirements for employment by the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Additionally, the successful candidate will be eligible for a faculty appointment in the Department of Psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University.  The candidate will be encouraged to assume committee and teaching responsibilities commensurate with their area of expertise, and opportunities are abundant.  Additional information about the laboratory can be garnered here and here

Education and Experience

A Ph.D. degree in Biochemistry, Pharmacology, or a related field and at least 3 years of postdoctoral experience in molecular pharmacology, and published peer-reviewed scientific papers are required. Candidates at the Senior Postdoctoral level, or the Assistant or Associate Professor level are encouraged to apply.

Application Instructions

Address questions to Aaron Janowsky ( and/or submit a curriculum vitae and statement of research interests to: Bill Schutzer (, and arrange for three letters of recommendation to be sent when requested.
