Job Details
A postdoctoral research fellow is available in the laboratory of Dr. Shinichi Kano at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Medicine. The laboratory investigates neuroimmune mechanisms related to psychiatry disorders and ultimately aims to discover new biological concepts that can be harnessed to develop therapeutic strategies for psychiatry and neurological disorders.
This fellow will work on the biology of immune-related extracellular vesicles in the context of brain function and behavior using rodent models and human patient samples. The successful candidate is expected to be strong in communication and analytical skills, self-motivated and success-driven, and able to work as a team member and an independent scholar. The candidate needs to be within two years of their Ph.D. or equivalent degree and show a record of scientific productivity (e.g., a first author publication or manuscript).
The candidate will be exposed to the following skills to conduct their projects. Expertise in at least one of these skills will be preferred:
-- EV biology (e.g., EV collection, characterization, quantification, molecular profiling)
-- Biostatistics and/or basic machine learning skills (e.g., supervised and unsupervised learning)
-- Bioinformatics skills (e.g., RNA-seq analysis)
-- Behavioral biology (e.g., social interaction, memory task)
-- Neurobiology (e.g., immunohistochemistry, stereotactic surgery, calcium imaging, electrophysiology)
-- Immunology (e.g., flow cytometry)
All Kano lab members are expected to learn new research skills and achieve their scientific and career goals in close communication with the PI. The position will be initially available for one year, with yearly renewal, based on the performance and funding availability. The successful candidates are encouraged to apply for independent fellowships for her/his future career development.
Interested candidates should submit a CV, a brief summary (1-2 pages) of research interests and career goals, list of publications, and contact information of at least two references to Shinichi Kano, M.D., Ph.D. (skano@uab.edu).
