Job Summary

The Pak lab is seeking a postdoctoral level biologist to work on an NIH-funded project to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms of synaptic dysfunction in neuropsychiatric disorders using human patient derived cellular models and develop novel experimental platforms to better understand synaptopathies. The role will bridge stem cell biology and neuroscience to perform mechanistic and therapeutic studies. This position will provide excellent opportunity and training in interdisciplinary approaches spanning genetic engineering and differentiation of iPSCs, transcriptomic and proteomic analyses, and neurophysiology. 

 

Essential Functions

Examples of duties:

  • Perform research in neurobiology of neurodevelopmental disorders (autism and schizophrenia) with a focus on elucidating synaptic dysfunction in human iPSC-derived neural cells. 
  • Write reports and/or papers on completed research in cooperation with professorial supervisor.
  • Maintain literature awareness of research area.
  • Present research results orally to professional groups.
  • Participate in group and divisional seminar in field(s) of study and in Department Colloquia.
  • Interact collegially with others in the laboratory, the department, and elsewhere at the University.
  • Collaborate with professorial supervisor in the preparation of research materials.
  • Maintain laboratory apparatus as applicable in the best possible order.
  • Train junior personnel in basic laboratory methods.

 

Other Functions

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness. 
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.

 

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • Ph.D. degree in a related field (Neuroscience, Molecular and cellular biology, Stem cell biology, or Bioengineering) at time of hire.
  • Demonstrated skills in molecular, genetic, and cellular techniques. Proficiency in whole cell patch clamp electrophysiology is a plus.
  • Evidence of productivity, as demonstrated by publications and other professional activities.
  • Intellectual curiosity, a working knowledge, and certain expertise in the research area under consideration.
  • Manual dexterity and laboratory skills consistent with the research being performed.
  • Initiative and drive.
  • Ability to communicate and work efficiently with others.
  • Scientific creativity.
  • Ability to work with a minimal amount of supervision.

 

Physical Demands/Working Conditions

Ability to work in a lab environment.

 

Work Schedule

  • 40 hours per week – flexible schedule.
  • Option to start position at 20 hours per week with the intention for full time employment with the return to campus.

 

Salary Information

Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be consistent with the postdoctoral bargaining unit contract.
