The Department of Chemistry at North Carolina State University invites outstanding applications for an NIH funded, full time, 12-month Postdoctoral Research Associate position (with a possibility of renewal) under the direction of Dr. Leslie Sombers. The successful candidate(s) will become part of an internationally recognized and multidisciplinary research group that spans Chemistry, Neuroscience, and Biomedical Engineering.

The broad objective of the project is to investigate and quantify endogenous opioid neuropeptides and catecholamines in live brain tissue using background-subtracted fast-scan cyclic voltammetry, microdialysis, and HPLC-MS. The project(s) will integrate multidisciplinary tools including electrochemistry, optogenetic and chemogenetic manipulation, and behavioral analyses.    

A successful candidate should have the following qualifications:

  • PhD in Neuroscience or a related field, with a track record of productivity and innovation
  • Solid background and experience in animal behavioral research and optogenetic/chemogenetic manipulations. Microdialysis sampling, electrochemistry, or electrophysiology experience would be an advantage. 
  • Creative thinking skills and solid command of neuroscience literature
  • Ability to work collaboratively with excellent communication skills
