We are seeking a highly motivated and scientifically excellent Director to join our Biochemical and Cellular Pharmacology (BCP) group to lead our Neuroscience efforts.  The BCP group is responsible for the design and execution of highly rigorous and quantitative in vitro enzyme, biochemical and cell based assays that faithfully recapitulate disease biology to discover and evolve project molecules from the earliest screening efforts at project inception to the characterization of the final IND candidate.

In this role, you will lead Biochemical and Cellular Pharmacology efforts through direct supervision of Scientists prosecuting small molecule drug discovery projects across several therapeutic areas.  You will function as the disease area leader within BCP for the Neuroscience portfolio and collaborate with Scientists and Directors in the Neuroscience Therapeutic Area department to ensure delivery of therapeutically relevant systems to all Neuroscience programs.  Additionally, you will function in a matrix supervisory role to BCP Scientists who prosecute our large molecule Neuroscience projects.

Moreover, you will continually adapt and evolve our innovative technology platforms to suit the next generation of targets and therapeutic modalities.  You will be a member of the Senior Leadership Team of Biochemical and Cellular Pharmacology and work directly with the Vice President to determine department strategy and decide on budget and resource deployment.  You and your team will work very closely with the Neuroscience, Antibody Engineering, Protein Chemistry, DMPK and Chemistry groups to drive transformational therapies into the clinic.

She/he must have a PhD or equivalent in Neuroscience or a related discipline with at least 10 years of working experience including prior experience managing a team of Scientists. She/he must be an expert recognized for a deep knowledge and understanding of the biological principles underpinning disease states associated with neurological conditions such as pain, neurodegeneration and psychiatric disorders. The candidate must have expertise in in vitro assay development to support lead identification/optimization efforts and expertise in deriving and maintaining physiologically relevant neuronal models.  She/he must also be familiar with cutting-edge technology in the drug discovery space and be able to partner with Business Development to identify the most strategic opportunities for Genentech. The successful candidate will have demonstrated success leading drug discovery teams and making high-impact scientific findings. The candidate must also be an excellent communicator and have a solution-oriented mindset toward both scientific problems and team dynamics.
