The University of Colorado School of Medicine invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics.   

The Chair reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine and serves on the School of Medicine’s Executive Committee. We are seeking a Chair with a strong track record of innovative scientific discovery who will maintain a well-funded research program.  They will have leadership skills commensurate with a world-class research-focused department and a commitment to inclusive excellence. The Chair will be responsible for leading growth in the Department’s research portfolio and for promoting collaborative research throughout the School of Medicine and the Anschutz Medical Campus. The Chair is expected to maintain and enhance diversity amongst the Department’s faculty, trainees and staff, enhance the Department’s educational programs, and assure transparency in the Department’s administration, management, budgetary planning and implementation.

The Department of Physiology and Biophysics has 14 primary and one affiliate faculty located on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. The department has an international reputation for research excellence, state-of-the art resources, a highly interactive and collaborative culture, and outstanding training programs.

The Department has an annual budget of $7.8 million, approximately 67 percent of which is derived from competitive extramural grants. Research in the department is built on a foundation of innovation and excellence, with strengths in ion channel biophysics, structure, function, and physiology in neurons and muscle cells as well as molecular, cellular, and systems neuroscience analyses of neuronal circuits.  Department of Physiology and Biophysics faculty participate extensively in medical and graduate student education and postdoctoral training and are members of several graduate programs, including the Neuroscience Graduate Program, Structural Biology and Biochemistry, Computational Biology, Pharmacology and Integrated Physiology graduate programs.

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, one of four campuses in the University of Colorado System, is the major academic medical center in the Rocky Mountain region, and one of the largest and most comprehensive biomedical research and clinical care centers in the western United States. The Anschutz Medical Campus is home to a NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, as well as UCHealth’s University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, and a new Veterans Affairs Hospital.

The CU School of Medicine has distinctive and highly productive research programs fueled by more than $421 million per year in grants, including more than $221 million from National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies. The School’s total annual clinical and research revenue exceeds $1.5 billion per year. The School has invested significant resources in structural biology/biophysics core and has recently established the Neurotechnology Center that provides cutting-edge core facilities to support neuroscience and works with School of Medicine Departments to grow the neuroscience research enterprise at CU-Anschutz.
