The University of Colorado School of Medicine invites nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Pharmacology.   

The Department of Pharmacology has 29 primary faculty located on the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora. The Department has an international reputation for research excellence, state-of-the art resources, a highly interactive and collaborative culture, and outstanding training programs. Department of Pharmacology faculty participate extensively in medical and graduate student education and postdoctoral training.

The Department has an annual budget of over $19 million, approximately 60 percent of which is derived from competitive extramural grants. Research in the Department is built on a foundation of innovation and excellence, with strength in neuroscience and cancer research. 

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, one of four campuses in the University of Colorado System, is the major academic medical center in the Rocky Mountain region, and one of the largest and most comprehensive biomedical research and clinical care centers in the western United States. The Anschutz Medical Campus is home to a NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center as well as UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado, and a new Veterans Affairs Hospital.

The CU School of Medicine has distinctive and highly productive research programs fueled by more than $421 million annually in grants, including more than $221 million from National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies. The School’s total annual clinical and research revenue exceeds $1.5 billion per year. Significant growth in all departments has been supported by several research initiatives, including an RNA Bioscience Initiative, a Human Immunology and Immunotherapy Initiative, a Fibrosis research consortium, a GI/Liver innate immune program, and a Data Science initiative. Additionally, the Neurotechnology Center is focused on developing novel technologies to investigate the nervous system. 

The Chair reports to the Dean of the School of Medicine and serves on the School of Medicine’s Executive Committee. We are seeking a Chair with a strong record of innovative scientific discovery who will maintain a well-funded research program. She/he will have leadership skills commensurate with a world-class research-focused department. The Chair will be responsible for leading growth in the Department, which has strengths in neuroscience and cancer research. Furthermore, they will promote collaborative research within the Department and throughout the School of Medicine and broader Anschutz Medical Campus. The Chair is expected to maintain and enhance diversity amongst the Department’s faculty, trainees and staff, enhance the Department’s educational programs, and assure transparency in the Department’s administration, management, and budgetary planning and implementation.
