Scientist, Neuroscientist at NIH/NINDS & Nido Biosciences

Bethesda, MA

Position Summary:

This is an outstanding opportunity for a highly motivated, collaborative, and innovative Scientist with a strong background in Neuroscience and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to join Nido’s discovery efforts. The candidate will support a collaborative effort between Nido Biosciences Inc. and the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) aimed at identifying therapeutic targets and biomarkers for genetically linked neurodegenerative diseases. The successful candidate will be based in the Ward Lab at NIH/NINDS in Bethesda, MD for approximately 24 months supporting this collaboration and helping Nido build their screening/iPSC capabilities. After that time, the candidate will have the option to join the Nido team as a full-time scientist in Cambridge, MA.

Nido Biosciences is focusing on developing small molecule therapeutics for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. Nido is currently advancing two small molecule programs for genetically defined subpopulations of neurodegenerative diseases. The lead program, in-licensed from a top academic investigator, is focused on the treatment of a rare expansion repeat disease. In parallel to advancing these programs, Nido is building a best-in-class screening platform to enable identification of modulators of neurodegenerative disease biology using iPSC-derived neuronal cells from patients. Nido Biosciences was founded in 2019 by 5AM Ventures through their 4:59 incubator program.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Work with a world class multidisciplinary team of drug discovery scientists to advance multiple small molecule programs as new clinical candidates for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases
  • Design and execute iPSC screening strategies to understand role of genetic modifiers of neurodegenerative diseases, including target discovery and validation
  • Work collaboratively to learn novel iPSC-screening approaches from NIH/NINDS collaborator and build these capabilities in-house at Nido
  • Champion innovation and new initiatives in discovery programs by proactively reviewing literature and other advancements in small molecule targets in neurodegeneration
  • Analyze, interpret, summarize, and present research findings in internal and external scientific meetings and conferences
  • Ability to meet aggressive timelines and deliverables in a collaborative environment
  • Maintain clear and accurate records of experiments and analyses
  • Contribute effectively to patent, report, and scientific publication writing

Qualifications:

Education Requirements:

PhD in neuroscience, cell biology, molecular biology, or a relevant scientific discipline with 0-3 years of experience. Prior experience in the culturing and maintenance of in vitro human cellular model systems (preferably iPSC-derived cell types), a strong background in working with high dimensional data (e.g. high-throughput gene expression analyses, single cell sequencing, CRISPR screens, etc.) is highly preferred.

Required Experience:

  • Strong background in mammalian cell culture, including experience working with iPSC-derived cells
  • Prior experience with CRISPR or CRISPRi techniques is highly desired
  • Ability to direct and understand bioinformatic analysis (e.g., use of R or Python packages) is necessary; expertise in conducting bioinformatics analyses is highly advantageous
  • Experience with high-content image analysis is a plus.
  • Strong background in molecular biology, neurobiology, and pathology.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively to advance drug discovery projects in a highly cross-functional environment
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

Title will be commensurate with experience.
