The Nolan Lab at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in Raleigh, NC is a basic/translational research lab at North Carolina State University that studies both: (1) mechanisms of cancer treatment induced pain, and (2) crosstalk between pain signaling pathways and cancer behavior.

A postdoctoral research scholar position is immediately available; the successful candidate will lead an NIH-funded project studying the role of cold-sensing (TRPM8-expressing) neurons in the pain which accompanies chemoradiotherapy associated oral mucositis. The project involves benchtop cell culture experiments, studies using genetically engineered mouse models, and a pair of pilot clinical studies wherein pain signaling will be studied in both dogs (NC State College of Veterinary Medicine) and humans (Duke Cancer Institute) undergoing treatment for head and neck cancer. This will be a two-year minimum position.

Our lab is a small but growing group of inquisitive young researchers who are passionate about improving quality of life and survivorship for cancer patient. NC State provides an outstanding academic environment for professional growth and development. And we are part of an exceptional cancer/radiation/pain biology community with excellent core facilities and resources both at NC State, and Duke.

The selected candidate will work under the direct guidance of Dr. Michael Nolan, a radiation/cancer biologist and veterinary radiation oncologist. Significant mentorship will also be provided by Drs. Duncan Lascelles (NC State; translational pain researchers and veterinary oncologic surgeon), Santosh Mishra (NC State; neurobiologist and itch researcher with particular expertise in mouse modeling), and Yvonne Mowrey (Duke; physician scientist, head and neck cancer radiation oncologist). We hope you will consider joining us!

The college is committed to practicing inclusivity, making community a priority and promoting innovation. We embrace effective leadership and we champion personal and professional growth.
