Job Details

A NIDA-funded postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Scott Rawls in the Center for Substance Abuse Research (CSAR) at Temple University (Lewis Katz School of Medicine) in Philadelphia to investigate a role for glutamate, chemokine and cytokine systems in the behavioral effects of psychostimulants and opioids. This preclinical project will focus on how methamphetamine, cocaine or opioid exposure impacts glutamatergic and immune markers in brain reward circuits and how innovative therapeutic candidates (e.g., dual glutamate release inhibitors/glutamate transport activators and hybrid chemokine receptor antagonists) affect psychostimulant intake, reinforcement and relapse. The project will utilize a combination of behavioral (self-administration, conditioned place preference, ICSS, forced swim, elevated plus maze), neurochemical (in vivo microdialysis/HPLC), cellular (gene/protein expression, immunohistochemistry, binding), and pain (acute, neuropathic) assays. We also utilize contemporary drug discovery approaches through collaborations with medicinal chemists.

The successful candidate will join a highly-interactive neuroscience community and work as part of a team that includes members of other laboratories in CSAR and the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. Eligible candidates have the possibility of being appointed to a NIH-funded T32 training grant. Candidates with a Ph.D. degree in neuroscience, pharmacology or a related discipline are preferred. Experience in behavioral techniques such as self-administration and conditioned place preference is highly desirable. Review of applications will begin immediately and the start date for the position is as soon as possible.

Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest, curriculum vitae and contact information for 3 referees to Scott Rawls, Ph.D., scott.rawls@temple.edu.  Salary will be commensurate with qualifications, laboratory experience, and institutional guidelines.
