The Search

Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis (WUSM) seeks an impactful physician-scientist with outstanding personal research accomplishments and demonstrated administrative ability to serve as the next head of the Department of Neurology. Renowned for its cutting-edge research, comprehensive and excellent clinical care, and innovative educational opportunities, the department is an epicenter for seminal discoveries and training the next generation of physician-scientists, playing a critical role in both the neuroscience and medical communities at Washington University. The incoming head will lead this top-ranked department to continued eminence and be afforded an exciting opportunity to build on the impressive research, clinical, and education programs integral to the missions of one of the most accomplished schools of medicine in the country.

WUSM has 2,471 faculty and 8,519 staff. In fiscal year 2019, grants and contracts totaling more than $686 million supported faculty research efforts. The School is comprised of 20 departments and is home to over 1,400 students. Attracting an exceptional group of residents and fellows as trainees, WUSM was recently ranked number six in comprehensive medical schools by U.S. News & World Report. Nineteen Nobel laureates have been associated with the School of Medicine, 15 of its present faculty members have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, and 27 faculty members belong to the National Academy of Medicine (Institute of Medicine). WUSM has extraordinary distinction in the life sciences and biological sciences, was recently ranked fourth in the nation in NIH funding, and leads research globally in a wide range of frontier research arenas across all of its basic science and clinical departments.

The head of Neurology will join a thriving institution at a remarkable time. In 2023, WUSM will open a new Neuroscience Research Building that will include neuroscientists from across the entire medical school including a large portion of the research effort within the Department of Neurology. The successful head will articulate a vision to guide the department across all missions by building collaborations across campus to enhance neuroscience research; managing the clinical operations to provide new opportunities in patient access, community health, and revenue generation; developing and enhancing the education and research missions; and continuing to recruit, mentor, and retain an increasingly distinguished and diverse faculty.
