Postdoctoral Fellow - ALS/FTD Research

Employer

Weinberg ALS Center at Thomas Jefferson University, Philadelphia, PA, USA

Principal Investigator

 Hristelina Ilieva, MD, PhD Contact

Description

The Weinberg ALS Center is looking for a postdoctoral fellow to join its translational research program under the supervision of Dr. Hristelina Ilieva. This program focuses on cell, molecular and biochemical work using bio-fluids (urine and blood), skin biopsy samples and, ultimately, iPSC-motor neurons derived from patients with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Fronto-temporal Dementia (FTD). The goal is to use these samples as template to (a) identify disease biomarkers and (b) in cases of genetically-linked ALS of elucidating details of the pathogenic mechanism(s) related to the genetic abnormality.  The successful candidate will use several approaches including neuronal cell culture, molecular biology, biochemistry, advanced microscopy, and analysis of human tissue samples. Experience with stem cells is a plus but not obligatory.  Our goal is to take advantage of the postdoc's existing expertise while allowing growth and development.

The laboratory and the Weinberg ALS Center offer a lively, diverse and dynamic team of clinicians and scientists with a broad range of expertise, working collaboratively with the common goal of making an impact on the lives of ALS/FTD patients. The successful candidate will work both independently and cooperatively and will have access to several superb research facilities at Jefferson University and within the Weinberg ALS Center as well as benefit from career-development opportunities, and a dedicated support network.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. A post-doctoral benefits package is available through Jefferson University. The position is available immediately.

Interested candidates, please, send a CV describing prior experience and technical skills as well as a letter of interest to Dr. Hristelina Ilieva – hristelina.ilieva@jefferson.edu

Requirements

A Ph.D. in a relevant area of neuroscience research and/or advanced techniques in biochemistry, molecular biology, and cell biology; a deep understanding of molecular mechanisms of neurodegeneration; and a strong desire to make important scientific discoveries, to build new research directions, and to apply one's expertise and develop new skills to advance the lab's research goals.

A record of high-profile first-author publications together with a record of success in competitive funding schemes, and prizes and awards for research, will make candidates particularly competitive for this position. We value diversity and inclusion, and actively encourage applications from those who bring diversity to the university.
