Description

The lab of Brad Goldstein, MD, PhD (Duke University School of Medicine, Dept of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences, Dept of Neurobiology) has an immediate position for a postdoctoral research scientist. The lab supports active projects studying neurogenesis in the adult olfactory epithelium, using cell culture, mouse models and human tissue samples. Approaches will include single cell analysis (such as scRNA-seq) as well as chromatin studies to explore mechanisms regulating stem cells and lineage differentiation. The broad goals of this work are to better understand damage and repair in the peripheral olfactory system, how acquired conditions lead to sensory loss (anosmia) such as viruses, trauma or aging, and to develop new therapeutic strategies for olfactory loss.

Job expectations

• Organizing and implementing complex research plans, the development of methods, data collection, analysis and evaluation, and writing.
• Assist the Principal Investigator in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences www.headandnecksurgery.duke.edu. The neurobiology research community at Duke provides a rich, collaborative environment for students, trainees and translational research.

• Analyze and interpret collected and prepare reports of high-profile data to investigators with a rapid turnaround time.
• Research new products, tests, and methods and report on relative feasibility, quality, and benefits of new developments.
• Summarize completed protocols and studies; write scientific articles and manuscripts for publication and presentation.
• Monitor progress of research projects and coordinate with Principal Investigator to stay on budget and schedule to meet the milestones and deliverables.
• Training in bioethics, laboratory management, and scientific writing.
• Maintain accurate laboratory documentation of experiments, including raw experimental data and laboratory notebooks.
• Present scientific results at meetings and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.

This position requires a doctoral degree in biological sciences or related disciplines and a strong record of publications in peer-reviewed journals.  Ideal candidates will possess excellent oral and written communication.  Responsibilities will require knowledge of basic neurobiology and wet lab methodologies, as well as some computational and bioinformatics skills (a knowledge of working in R is helpful). 

Postdoctoral appointments are generally for up to 3 years.
