NIH-funded postdoctoral positions in mammalian circadian timing and Alzheimer’s disease

Two positions are currently available in the laboratory of Dr. Karl Obrietan (Department of Neuroscience) & Dr. Kari Hoyt (Division of Pharmaceutics and Pharmacology) at Ohio State University.  For position 1, the research project is aimed at understanding the mechanistic relationships (at a cellular, systems, and genetics level) between dysregulation of the circadian timing system and Alzheimer’s disease pathogenesis. In specific, the project will employ transgenic mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease, and functional read-outs will include clock-gated regulation of cellular signaling, neuronal plasticity and synaptogenesis within both cortico-limbic circuits and the suprachiasmatic nucleus (the locus of the master circadian clock). For position 2, the research project will characterize the roles that peptidergic, Ca2+ and kinase signaling play in the regulation of neuronal circadian clock timing and clock entrainment mechanisms within the suprachiasmatic nucleus.   Both positions will utilize advanced cellular and molecular imaging techniques including confocal microscope-based profiling of brain slices and primary neuronal cultures, and multi-photon microscope-based in vivo cranial window neuronal profiling; functional transgenic read-outs will include clock gene reporters, the calcium indicator GCaMP and FRET-based kinase reporters. Of note, both the confocal (Leica SP8) and multi-photon (Olympus FVMPE-RS) systems are housed within the lab and postdoctoral fellows will have priority, fee-free, access.  These techniques will be paired with standard cellular- and molecular-based profiling methods as well as, pharmacological, behavioral and sleep/EEG profiling approaches.

Candidates with a Ph.D. in biological sciences, including neuroscience, cell biology, pharmacology or related fields, and a strong interest in cell signaling and quantitative analytical methods are encouraged to apply.
