SUNY Empire Innovation Professor (Full Professor) - Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science - Binghamton University – State University of New York (SUNY)

 The Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University invites applications for a senior faculty position at the full professor level, with a possible start date of Fall 2020. We invite prominent leaders in the interdisciplinary fields of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), and data science that are integrated into the healthcare applications. This position was made possible by the SUNY Empire Innovation Program, and will be the first of the three cluster hires in “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for Healthcare Systems” over the next two years. All three faculty will have the title, “SUNY Empire Innovation Professor.”

The successful candidate will be expected to present a clear vision for leading the University’s existing research and industrial collaborations, which encompass computer vision and imaging, cybersecurity, nursing, biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences, data science, computer science, systems science, statistical learning, network science, mathematical programming, informatics and real-time system control, and health systems engineering.  This candidate will also lead the subsequent search for two senior faculty positions (at the associate professor level) during the 2020-2021 academic year.  These hires will have a direct role in the growth of the University’s education programs related to artificial intelligence. 

Although the area of specialization within the AI/ML/healthcare fields is open, we are particularly interested in a candidate who can conduct and lead research in the fundamental AI/ML core research and healthcare applications. Other key areas of interest include affective computing, emotional AI, trustworthy AI, computer vision, natural language processing, imaging and perception, cognitive and robotic science, computational learning theory, large-scale and hyper-parameter optimization, statistical machine learning, complex systems, advanced network science, process mining, data mining, precision and personalized medicine, disease & behavior intervention modeling, delivery optimization, medical knowledge extraction and representation, bioprocess modeling and integration, tissue biofabrication, and robotic engineering of bioprocesses.

Binghamton University currently enrolls over 18,000 students and the engineering school has over 3,250 students across five departments (Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Systems Science and Industrial Engineering) and two programs (Materials Science and Engineering, Engineering Design Division).  The engineering school maintains a close collaboration with other colleges (Harpur College of Arts and Sciences, Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences, and the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences) to support the development of research and scholarship. Candidates must have a doctorate in an engineering discipline or a closely related field, and must have developed an outstanding research program, including a strong record of securing external funding and establishing leadership. In addition, candidates must have a strong record of scholarship as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications and citations, and be an effective instructor at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Binghamton University’s new Health Sciences Campus in Johnson City includes the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Decker College of Nursing and Health Sciences.  By cultivating associations with the hospitals and increasing research investments, the University aims to become a leader in medical and pharmaceutical research.  Towards that end, Binghamton University is also establishing a new Brain and Body Imaging Center, in partnership with United Health Services that will enable new research collaborations utilizing fMRI imaging.
