The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), is seeking exceptional candidates for the position of Scientific Director, Intramural Research Program (IRP). The Scientific Director, IRP will lead and manage a vibrant basic, behavioral and clinical research program with a budget of approximately $96 million and a staff of nearly 400 employees, contractors, and fellows, including 26 independent principal investigators and approximately 80 pre/post-doctoral and visiting fellows (https://irp.drugabuse.gov/).

With input from the NIDA Director, as well as from a Board of Scientific Counselors, an external advisory group that undertakes rigorous reviews of the NIDA IRP scientists and their research programs, the Scientific Director is responsible for developing and implementing an overall vision for the IRP that is consistent with the mission and strategic objectives of NIDA. This effort includes the recruitment of new faculty, managing the NIDA IRP’s scientific resources (including a vivarium and 4 shared core facilities) as well as building trans-NIH scientific collaborations and participating in trans-NIH research initiatives. Applicants should be able to facilitate translation of basic science of addiction into clinically useful treatments and should be able to facilitate initiatives that bring together intra- and extramural investigators and infrastructure both within and outside of NIH.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:  Applicants must have an M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree, or an equivalent doctoral degree, in the biomedical sciences and have senior-level research experience and outstanding scientific knowledge of Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) and addiction research programs in one or more specific areas related to medications discovery, clinical care and services, neurobiology, behavioral neuroscience, neuroimaging, and molecular and cellular research. Candidates should have demonstrated leadership; using innovative approaches to develop scientific programs; planning, program assessment, and analysis of program objectives; resolution of operational problems and issues; and the ability to manage financial and human resources including building, motivating, and maintaining a diverse staff and serving as a spokesperson. Applicants should be known and respected within their profession, both nationally and internationally, as distinguished individuals of outstanding scientific competence.  Support and resources are also available to allow the Scientific Director to lead his/her own research program.

 SALARY/BENEFITS: The NIDA Scientific Director will be appointed at a salary commensurate with his/her qualifications and experience.  A full package of federal employee benefits is available including retirement, health and life insurance, long-term care insurance, leave and savings plans (401K equivalent and Roth IRA options).
