Postdoctoral Fellow

Laboratory of Hong-yuan Chu, Ph.D.

Van Andel Institute (VAI), a leading independent biomedical research facility, is dedicated to determining the epigenetic, genetic, molecular and cellular origins of cancer, Parkinson’s and other diseases, and translating those findings into effective therapies. The Institute is home to more than 400 scientists and support staff that work in on-site laboratories and in collaborative partnerships that span the globe.

Hong-Yuan Chu, Ph.D., is the head of Neural Circuitry and Neurodegeneration laboratory at VAI, and the lab aims to understand molecular, cellular, and circuitry mechanisms related to Parkinson’s disease (PD) pathogenesis and pathophysiology using novel mouse models of PD (https://vari.vai.org/research-groups/).

The lab is seeking an outstanding candidate for a postdoctoral fellow position, who will work to define key cellular and circuit mechanisms that contribute to dopaminergic neurodegeneration and that underlie the devastating motor and nonmotor symptoms in PD. To achieve this goal, the successful candidate will employ multidisciplinary approaches, e.g., anatomical, physiological, and behavioral tools, to understand cellular and synaptic activity in mouse models of PD, and to link the molecular and cellular changes to motor dysfunction at the behavior level.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to be trained with both traditional and state-of-the-art technologies for neuroscience research and will work in a highly interdisciplinary environment that allows close interaction with growing PD research community at VAI.

VAI provides postdoctoral training opportunities to scientists beginning their research careers. The fellowships are to help promising scientists advance their knowledge and research experience and at the same time support the research endeavors of VAI under the mentorship of a VAI Faculty member. All VAI Postdoctoral Fellows are encouraged to apply for external funding as soon as it is practical and reasonable after hire. Receiving a fellowship award provides recognition for both the fellow and VAI!

HOW TO APPLY:

  • A cover letter describing your research interests, experience, and how you might contribute to the research in Chu Lab.
  • An up-to-date Curriculum Vitae.
  • A list of 3 individuals who have agreed to act as references along with their contact details.

This position will be open until filled and will be reviewing applications on an ongoing basis. To apply, please email Hong-Yuan Chu, Ph.D. at hongyuan.chu@vai.org

VARI is committed to achieving excellence through increasing diversity. We actively encourage applications from women, persons of color, persons with disabilities, and other underrepresented groups.
