Columbia University's Mortimer B. Zuckerman Mind Brain Behavior Institute (the Zuckerman Institute) brings together researchers to explore aspects of mind and brain, through the exchange of ideas and active collaboration. The Zuckerman Institute's home will be the Jerome L. Greene Science Center on Columbia's new Manhattanville campus. Situated in the heart of Manhattan, at full capacity the Zuckerman Institute will house approximately 58 laboratories employing a broad range of interdisciplinary approaches to transform our understanding of the mind and brain. In this highly collaborative environment, labs work together to gain critical insights into human health by exploring how the brain develops, performs, endures and recovers from trauma or disease. 

The Shapiro lab within the Zuckerman Institute seeks an Associate Research Scientists (ARS) to conduct basic structural biology research. Projects include questions related to cell surface proteins that define the specificity of neuronal interactions; integral membrane proteins involved in mechanotransduction of sound; and others. 


Minimum Qualifications

MD, PhD, or doctorate in related field.


A PhD in biochemistry and at least three years of related postdoctoral basic research experience is essential. Qualified applicants will be accomplished in (1) recombinant protein production, (2) protein biochemistry, and (3) x-ray crystallography, with significant experience in molecular model building and refinement. Applicants with experience in electron cryo-microscopy, particularly cryo-tomography, are welcome to apply; those with crystallographic experience will have the opportunity to learn cryo-EM methods.  The successful candidate will work in an active group of research scientists and interact directly to the Principal Investigator.  A proven record of related publications is required.  



Preference will be given to candidates with significant knowledge and interest in neurobiology.
