Department Head, Neurosciences & Experimental Therapeutics

The Texas A&M University seeks a distinguished academician with proven scientific, strategic and collaborative leadership skills to serve as the next Department Head for Neurosciences and Experimental Therapeutics (NExT). A visionary leader is sought to build upon existing strengths and create a nationally recognized department which has thematic alignment with the Departmental, the College of Medicine and the Health Science Center’s vision. The Department Head will lead initiatives to expand the funded research portfolio of the Department and to engage with translational research in the Department and College.

  • The Department has 16 full-time faculty members and is one of four basic science departments within the College of Medicine.
  • Departmental faculty include both nationally recognized leaders and early career investigators, who are funded by agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF) and numerous private foundations.
  • The department’s faculty teach key courses (e.g. Medical Neuroscience, Gross Anatomy, Histology, Pharmacology) in the 1st and the 2nd years of the undergraduate medical (MD) curriculum, which includes the new Engineering Medicine (EnMed) track, and in the graduate (PhD and MD+) programs.
  • Program strengths within the department include: brain development, cellular/molecular bases of drug and alcohol addiction, fetal alcohol syndrome disorders, epilepsy, neuroinflammation, traumatic brain and spinal cord injury, circadian biology, neurobiology of aging, neurodegenerative diseases, neuro-oncology and neuroteratology, drug development and experimental neurotherapeutics

Faculty within the department are also affiliated with university-wide interdisciplinary faculties including the Texas A&M Institute of Neuroscience, the Texas Brain and Spine Institute and the Women's Health in Neuroscience Program.

The Department of Neuroscience and Experimental Therapeutics also participates in an interdisciplinary graduate program in the Medical Sciences that leads primarily to the PhD degree with special emphasis in interdisciplinary training in Neurosciences or Experimental Therapeutics. The PhD program in Medical Science usually requires 4-5 years to complete. Graduates from our program are prepared for leadership roles in research and teaching in academic, industrial, or governmental positions.

Position Summary

  • The Department Head shall be responsible for providing academic leadership for the faculty, staff and students in the department.
  • The successful candidate will be charged with expanding the research portfolio of the department.
  • They will provide leadership in ensuring excellence in fulfilling all the department’s key academic missions, including medical and graduate education, basic and translational research and institutional service.
  • They will have the vision and ability to support the existing research strengths of the department and to stimulate new basic and translational research efforts that are consistent with the strategic goals of the Department, the College of Medicine and the Health Science Center.
  • The Department Head is expected to be actively engaged in scholarly and educational activities at a level commensurate with the academic rank of Full Professor.

The successful candidate will present a distinguished record of achievement in research, education, administration, and financial stewardship. They will demonstrate outstanding academic judgment, as well as an uncompromising commitment to academic excellence, diversity in all its forms, and interdisciplinary and inter-professional collaborations. They must build on the success of the College of Medicine’s current clinical and translational research programs and leverage the opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration within the Texas A&M University community.


  • An M.D., M.D./PhD or Ph.D. or equivalent degree with a sustained record of peer reviewed publications and funding in neurosciences.
  • A well- respected scientist with significant leadership progression and managerial experience within an academic setting.
  • National recognition as evidenced by involvement in academic societies at a national level.
  • Candidates must possess academic credentials and experience that qualify them for appointment as a Full Professor at Texas A&M University.
