Two postdoctoral positions are currently available in the Translational Pain Neuroscience laboratory at the University of Arizona in Tucson (PI’s Dr. Frank Porreca and Dr. Edita Navratilova) to undertake cutting-edge research in the field of pain behavior, motivation and cognition. The research is focused on investigating neural circuits underlying affective, emotional and cognitive pain behaviors in a variety of rodent pain models including migraine, post-traumatic headache neuropathic pain and others. The laboratory uses novel viral and fluorescent neuronal tracing methods in combination with genetic mouse models, fast scan cyclic voltammetry, optogenetics/chemogenetics and CRISPR gene editing to investigate the structural connectivity and function of neural networks processing pain. An additional interest of the laboratory is on characterization of genetic and molecular adaptations within the brain circuits occurring in chronic pain conditions that are relevant to long-term changes in affective behavior and impaired learning. This project will use cell sorting, proteomics, genomics and molecular biology (qPCR, RNA sequencing, in situ hybridization) to identify new mechanisms and potential targets for chronic pain co-morbid conditions.

The applicants should have an experience with rodent handling and behavior and background in one or more of the following: (a) in vivo genetic manipulations (optogenetics/chemogenetics or CRISPR technology), (b) molecular biology, (c) fluorescent microscopy and in situ hybridization, or (d) cell sorting (FACS, MACS). Background in pain research and rodent surgeries is desired but not required. Applicants should have a PhD degree in a relevant discipline and publications in international scientific journals.
