The labs of Dr. Francisco J. Alvarez (Department of Physiology) and Dr. Arthur W. English (Department of Cell Biology) seek a person to fill a new postdoctoral position. The successful candidate will carry out work on the significance of inhibitory synaptic function and KCC2 regulation in motoneurons axotomized after nerve injuries. The candidate will perform nerve injuries, use retrograde labeling to identify affected motor pools, interfere in various ways with inhibitory synaptic function in vivo, and assess regeneration efficacy using electromyography and histology. He or she will also investigate the reaction to peripheral nerve injuries of different genetic subclasses of spinal premotor inhibitory interneurons and use genetic approaches to interfere with their synaptic function during motor axon regeneration. The fellow will work in an environment with high diversity and will have opportunities to collaborate with others in our labs and Departments and act as a mentor for undergraduate and graduate students. The fellow will be expected to write research summaries, meeting abstracts and manuscripts for publications as well as present research progress in national meetings. The fellow will also be encouraged to submit fellowship and grant proposals for career development.


Other details: The position relates to a new NIH grant currently funded for two years. Start date will be as soon as possible after 10/1/2019. Continuation after the two year period will depend on availability of funds and mutual agreement between the postdoc and Drs. Alvarez and English. Salary and fringe benefits will be paid according to the NIH scale .

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in Neuroscience or related biomedical area and a record of peer-reviewed research publications. Excellent scientific writing ability, strong oral communication skills and self-motivated for research.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: Mouse survival surgeries, confocal microscopy, in vivo electrophysiology (EMGs) or in vitro (path-clamp whole cell recordings) and previous work on spinal cord.
