A postdoctoral position is available to study central auditory development and plasticity, from synapse function to cortical processing during perceptual task performance. Projects seek to understand how auspicious or adverse developmental experiences influence the emergence of adult behavior. One set of projects focus on the pivotal role played by juvenile auditory learning during the maturation of perceptual skills, and the cortical mechanisms that support mature performance. A second set of projects explore how a brief period of developmental hearing loss can cause persistent impairments of cortical synapse function which are mirrored by deficits in cortical encoding and perception. To address these questions, we combine synaptic physiology in brain slices, optogenetic and chemogenetic manipulations, wireless recordings from cortex in freely moving awake-behaving animals, and viral vectors to express gerbil-specific synaptic proteins. Candidates are expected to have some experience with behavior or neurophysiology, and a primary interest in auditory neuroscience. The Center for Neural Science at NYU is located in Greenwich Village, and offers modern laboratory facilities, a stimulating research environment, and excellent opportunities for collaboration. Three years of NYU postdoctoral housing may be available. URL: http://saneslab.com/. Send vita, statement of research interests and career goals, and contact information of two references to Dan Sanes (dhs1@nyu.edu).
