About The Scripps Research Institute

The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) is a nonprofit research institution whose philosophy emphasizes the creation of basic knowledge in the biosciences for its application in medicine, the pursuit of fundamental scientific advances through interdisciplinary programs and collaborations, and the education and training of researchers preparing to meet the scientific challenges of the future. The La Jolla campus provides more than 1 million square feet of space on 35 acres of land (14.7 of which are owned by the institute) next to the Pacific Ocean. Located in close proximity to the University of California, San Diego, the campus is situated with easy access to San Diego's scientific community, which includes the Salk Institute for Biological Studies and Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute, as well as a concentration of some 300 biotechnology companies. Approximately 2,650 scientists and staff currently work on the La Jolla campus in areas including immunology, molecular and cellular biology, chemistry, neurosciences, autoimmune diseases, cardiovascular diseases, virology, and synthetic vaccine development. Particularly significant is the study of the basic structure and design of biological molecules; in this arena, the La Jolla campus is among a handful of the world's leading centers. The more than 200 principal investigators at TSRI include many distinguished leaders in their fields, including three Nobel laureates and numerous members of the National Academy of Sciences (including its Institute of Medicine), American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and American Association for the Advancement of Science.
