The Department of Urology in the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California (USC) is soliciting applications for a new research faculty appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the research (nontenure) track. The new faculty position will be of central importance to the exciting expansion of the Department’s basic research program and its deepening translational integration with our training and clinical programs.

Qualifications/Eligibility: Although all applications will receive serious consideration, preference will be given to candidates who are basic researchers who work in highly translational preclinical paradigms and with an interest building a research program emphasizing the role of stress, inflammation and pain. Experience in neurophysiologic recordings in-vivo or in slice preparations is highly desirable, as is a demonstrable track record for collaborative, multi-disciplinary research. Expertise in physiologic assessment of bladder function, rodent models, anatomical (circuit), molecular, and cellular mechanisms of pain processing is a plus but not essential. Other requirements include strong laboratory, analytical, and organizational skills; strong verbal and written communication skills in English; and the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team.

Research: The Department of Urology’s dedication to research has earned top tier funding from the National Institute of Health (NIH). The multidisciplinary, comprehensive department includes a number of internationally recognized, well-established clinical investigators. The department includes four full-time Ph.D. basic scientists and four medical oncologists who have active laboratory programs focused on various aspects of urologic oncology. Each has a dedicated fully-equipped laboratory with technical staff support. The laboratories are located in either the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center or the adjacent Harlyne J. Norris Research Tower. In addition to individual laboratory equipment, the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center has 12 laboratory cores with technical staff and equipment available to cancer center laboratories. These include DNA sequencing, genomics, microarrays, cell culture, cell and tissue imaging, small animal imaging, pharmacoanalytical core, transgenic mouse modeling, translational pathology, biostatistics and informatics. Clinical: The department of Urology is emerging as a world-class program and has grown considerably in the past several years. There are more than 1400 urologic oncology surgical cases annually and US News and World Report ranked us #15 in the nation for urology in the 2016-2017 rankings. With a 30-year foundation and an experienced team, USC urologists are recognized as top-ranked leaders in the field, making them excellent mentors. Our team includes more than 65 board-certified urologists, radiologists, oncologic surgeons and specialized pathologists who are proficient in the most advanced diagnostic, surgical and recovery approaches. The Department’s clinical educators and clinical services are a fundamental part of the academic and training missions, in collaboration with the Keck Medical Center and Clinics, the Norris Cancer Institute, Los Angeles County + University of Southern California (LAC+USC) Medical Center, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and many other community partners.
Home to the Keck School of Medicine, the 79-acre Health Sciences Campus (HSC) is located three miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles and seven miles from the USC University Park Campus. It lies adjacent to the LAC+USC Medical Center, a primary affiliate of the Keck School of Medicine. HSC is home to the Keck Medical Center of USC – a state-of-the-art USC-owned academic medical center comprised of the Keck Hospital of USC and the USC Norris Cancer Hospital.
