The newly-established Medicines Discovery Institute represents a major investment in translational science by Cardiff University. The goal of the Institute is to translate world-leading research on scientific understanding of disease mechanisms into innovative therapeutic approaches. Our vision is to play a leading role in discovering new medicines in areas of high unmet need, with a particular emphasis on, but not exclusive to, neuroscience and mental health. We are creating a vibrant community of researchers across both academic and biotech sectors engaged in major research programmes which build off the unique strengths of Cardiff University and work collaboratively with other universities and companies across Wales and internationally.
Building off investment from both the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government’s Sêr Cymru scheme and Cardiff University, we will recruit a number of key academic, research and operational roles to work alongside the current and future grant & industry funded staff. We are currently looking for three faculty positions to support the lead academics, the Sêr Cymru Professors in Translational Drug Discovery, Profs John Atack and Simon Ward, in the Medicines Discovery Institute. These new faculty positions will cover expertise in assay development, cell biology and structural biology and interface with the existing experience in translational neuroscience and medicinal chemistry. These tenured, academic posts will play a key role in developing and supporting a portfolio of major translational drug discovery projects and will be critical to the success of the Medicines Discovery Institute and the building of a cohesive, inter-dependent working environment. As such, it is expected that the main research interests of all five faculty positions are well aligned and the successful applicants will be required to demonstrate successful team working and established or emerging excellence within the relevant field.
We wish to appoint an individual who has demonstrated expertise in cellular models and assay systems. This individual will be responsible for developing over- and under-expression systems in animal and human-relevant cell culture models of psychiatric and neurodegeneration disorders and characterising their biochemical and functional phenotypes following pharmacological manipulation. These assays will be used within the screening cascades of a variety of projects to build confidence in the progression of drug discovery projects and allow rapid decision making in molecule design
A well-established expertise and significant proven portfolio of research and/or relevant industrial experience within the following research fields: 1. Use of over- and under-expression systems (e.g. siRNA, CRISPR gene editing etc) in animal and human-relevant cell culture models of psychiatric and neurodegeneration disorders 2. Biochemical and functional characterisation and pharmacological manipulation of cellular phenotypes
The candidate will be expected to have a proven ability to publish in national journals and present at national meetings/conferences and have knowledge of current status of research in specialist field and experience within the area of drug discovery within the neuroscience therapeutic area and/or ion channel pharmacology
