The University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU), Center for Image Sciences (CIS), has an open position for a postdoctoral fellow within one of the high-profile BRAIN Initiative research programs. In this multi-center program the relationship between neuronal and neurovascular responses to stimuli is investigated in great detail, in both animals and humans. The main goal of the program is to improve our understanding of the neuronal principles that drive the fMRI BOLD signal, using multiple imaging modalities in the same subjects and developing mathematical models to capture those principles. The program will host eight postdocs and multiple principal investigators in The Netherlands (Utrecht) and the US (New York).
The focus of the position is modeling the cortical vasculature and hemodynamics that underlie the fMRI signal. The project will involve the validation of detailed vascular/hemodynamic models in the rodent brain and translating and expanding the models to the human brain. Model predictions will be tested with optical imaging and high field fMRI measurements performed in both rodents and humans, via collaboration with other researchers in the program responsible for data acquisition and analysis, providing empirical data for modeling and validation.
The successful candidate will have completed a PhD in biomedical engineering, computational neuroscience, mathematics or a related discipline relevant for the development and implementation of models, and will have conducted neuroscience research with an emphasis on modeling biological signals. Experience in programming (Matlab, C++, or equivalent language) is required and experience in fMRI is preferred. The candidate should be able proactively contribute to planning and decision making in research strategy, should be a team player and have excellent social skills.
Applications should be sent to Dr. Natalia Petridou (N.Petridou@umcutrecht.nl) and should include a cover letter, a curriculum vitae including a publication list, and references of at least two people applicants have worked with.
Additional Salary Information: For this 100% post, the minimum gross monthly salary will be 3527 euro, increasing annually according to the UMCU guidelines. This will be a temporary appointment for 1 year which can be extended by 3 years following positive assessment. The position is available immediately.
