A Postdoctoral Researcher position is available in the computational neuroscience lab of Carmen Canavier in the School of Medicine, Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy at LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans to study the dynamic diversity of midbrain dopamine neurons in close collaboration with electrophysiologist Jochen Roeper at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany. The successful candidate will construct morphologically and biophysically realistic models of distinct subpopulations of dopamine neurons to account for experimentally observed differences in their bursting and pacemaking dynamics. These simulations will require in some cases incorporation of stochastic channel models and second messenger cascades. The primary duties will involve linear and non-linear analyses, writing code, calibrating single neuron models, and generating predictions that lead to additional experiments.
Ph.D. in Neuroscience, Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or a related field of study
MD or DDS may also be acceptable
Writing code, running the simulation package NEURON, using single neuron models
Familiarity with non-linear dynamics and signal processing
The Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy has a history of strong commitment to the various missions of the LSU Health Sciences Center in New Orleans– research, education and service. The department is actively involved in the teaching of many courses in the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Allied Health, Nursing and Graduate Studies.
The research programs of the department have greatly expand...ed over the past several years through the hiring of faculty who have expertise in the areas of cell and molecular biology, developmental biology, and neurobiology. Within the department are several core equipment research facilities which support investigators within the department and the rest of the LSUHSC. Some of the current research programs among others within the department are: studies of receptor, channel, and membrane properties of neurons; cellular and behavioral function of the visual system; brain development and plasticity; developmental biology; and computer imaging technology used to study human embryonic development.
