The Franks Laboratory (www.thefrankslab.org) has openings for postdoctoral positions. Our lab takes a multidisciplinary approach to understand the neural circuit computations that implement odor recognition, a process that resides at the interface of perception and memory.
This position will be ideal for a talented and driven individual who has recently, or is just about to, finish their Ph.D. work in neuroscience or another related discipline. However, all enthusiastic, curious and ambitious candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
Our overarching goal is to generate a complete wiring diagram for the neural circuits that implement odor recognition. To achieve this requires knowing both how odor information is represented in the brain, and how these representations change with experience. The 3-layered olfactory (piriform) cortex is thought to be the locus for both the perception of odor objects and the formation of odor memories. As such, it provides an exceptionally tractable model cortical circuit to address these questions.
We use a broad arsenal of tools to tackle this problem, including extracellular recordings in large populations of neurons in awake, behaving mice; genetic tools that allow us to capture and manipulate activity in ensembles of odor-responsive neurons; different chemo- and optogentic actuators to disrupt targeted elements of the circuit; in vitro recordings to functionally characterize each element of the circuit; and computational tools to test and further our intuitions about how it all works.
The Franks Lab is in the Department of Neurobiology at Duke University, located in Durham, North Carolina. Our lab is part of a close and collaborative core of systems neuroscience labs, providing an intense yet supportive intellectual environment.
