The Department of Neurosurgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago is seeking a Laboratory Director to oversee research activities in its spinal cord injury laboratory. The primary role of this position is to direct and coordinate a basic science laboratory in collaboration with Richard G. Fessler, MD, PhD. The primary direction of this laboratory is to evaluate the efficacy of stem cell transplantation as a therapeutic option for acute and chronic spinal cord injury. Dr. Fessler is a principal investigator in the Asterias-sponsored SciStar clinical trial; thus an important direction of this laboratory is to develop therapies directly translatable to human clinical trials in spinal cord injury. In addition to coordinating the day-to-day management of this laboratory and its activities, it is anticipated that the successful candidate will supervise pre- and post-doctoral collaborators, graduate students, fellows, residents, and medical students who become involved in these projects, as well as participate in data collection and analysis, manuscript preparation, and grant application. Previous faculty appointment is required; mid- to senior-level candidates with a history of funding are preferred.

Rush University Medical Center is a large tertiary academic medical center located in downtown Chicago that encompasses a 664-bed hospital serving adults and children, including the Johnston R. Bowman Health Center and a new 376-bed hospital building known as the Tower. The new 14-story hospital holds 304 adult acute and critical care beds, as well as a dedicated 28 bed Neuro-ICU. There are 28 operating rooms accommodated with specialized equipment and technology including intraoperative imaging, microsurgery and robotics. In addition to the operating rooms, there are 14 interventional procedure rooms. Our Emergency Department expanded greatly and now holds 60 treatment rooms, which attributes to Rush being one of the busiest ED’s in Chicago. These improvements in our physical plant provide the Rush Department of Neurosurgery with all of the tools necessary to remain at the forefront in patient care and resident education.
