Director, Division of Neuroscience
The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) seeks a Director to lead its extramural Division of Neuroscience. The Director of the Division of Neuroscience will be responsible for planning and directing a program of extramural and collaborative research in neuroscience, guiding NINDS’s largest research portfolio and charting the future of a vibrant, growing neuroscience research community https://www.ninds.nih.gov/. The Division of Neuroscience has a flat organizational structure and includes twenty-nine Program Directors and seventeen Analysts assigned to six specific scientific clusters in basic neuroscience and neurobiology of disease including Neurogenetics, Channels, Synapses and Circuits, Systems and Cognitive Neuroscience, Repair and Plasticity, Neurodegeneration, and Neural Environments. The scientific fields promoted through these clusters include, but are not limited to, neurogenetics and developmental research, computational neuroscience, stroke, traumatic injury to the brain and nervous system, neurodegenerative disorders, movement disorders, brain tumors, development of prosthetic devices, rehabilitation, epilepsy and epileptogenesis, neurodegeneration, pain, pediatric neurology, infectious and immune disorders of the brain and nervous system, and disorders related to sleep mechanisms. The Director will be responsible for coordinating NINDS research within the Division and with the other extramural science Divisions - the Division of Translational Research, the Division of Clinical Research and the Division of Extramural Activities. The Director will also be responsible for coordinating NINDS’s neuroscience collaborations across multiple NIH Institutes and Centers and with other Federal and private partners. The Director will be a primary advisor to the NINDS Director and will report to the NINDS Director.
The Director of the Division of Neuroscience will lead a group of approximately 60 professional staff. The research portfolio of the Division of Neuroscience includes an annual budget of over $1 billion dollars in grants and over $30 million in R&D contracts.
Salary will be commensurate with experience. The position will be filled under a Title 42(f) excepted service appointment and a full package of federal benefits will be provided.
Qualifications: Applicants must possess a Ph.D. or M.D., and have senior-level research experience, knowledge of neuroscience research programs and strong abilities to lead the development and execution of collaborative work. This individual should be known and respected within the neuroscience community. S/he should have demonstrated leadership, organizational skills, and have broad visionary capabilities, with demonstrated ability to collaborate with researchers and other stakeholders in the science community. S/he should have experience developing and setting strategic priorities, as well as communicating and promoting scientific advances, and should have demonstrated skills in managing human and financial resources and budgetary planning.
