Two post-doctoral positions are available to study spinal cord injury in the laboratory of Steve Perlmutter in the Dept. of Physiology & Biophysics at the University of Washington in Seattle. Our lab is interested in understanding and manipulating neural plasticity in mammalian motor systems, and in developing new therapies that improve recovery of voluntary movement after spinal cord and brain damage. We use activity-dependent, targeted, electrical and optical stimulation and delivery of neuromodulators and neurotrophins to rewire cortical and spinal connections in macaque monkeys and in rats with cervical spinal cord injury. The available positions, supported by recent funding from NIH and the Dept. of Defense Spinal Cord Injury Research Program, will focus on the rat spinal cord injury projects and involve therapeutic interventions to promote plasticity in spared neural pathways, behavioral assessments of motor and sensory function, and neurophysiological and anatomical techniques to elucidate underlying mechanisms of recovery. Other projects involve active collaborations with cell and gene biologists, neurosurgeons, and engineers designing devices for brain-computer interfaces. Ideal candidates will have, or will complete within the next two years, a PhD in a related field, and will have experience in at least one of the following areas: neurophysiology, spinal cord injury, brain-computer interfaces, rodent behavioral testing.
Additional Salary Information: Commensurate with NIH postdoctoral salary scale
