The Speer laboratory at the University of Maryland, College Park is seeking accomplished and motivated postdoctoral fellows to join us in advancing cutting-edge research in super-resolution imaging of developing neural circuits. We are investigating the activity-dependent and molecular mechanisms that regulate the refinement of parallel retinal pathways to distinct visual centers in the brain. We combine molecular-genetic tools with targeted electrophysiological recordings and post-hoc super-resolution circuit imaging to investigate the structural, functional, and molecular organization of retinofugal microcircuit connectivity. We are looking for researchers excited to innovate new molecular labeling protocols, nanoscale imaging approaches, and data analyses using high-performance computing resources. Postdocs will have access to excellent scientific resources, enhanced engagement with the PI, and opportunities for career development and training (e.g., conference presentations, advanced technique courses, scientific writing, grant applications, etc.).
Successful candidates should have a strong background in molecular, developmental, or systems neuroscience and/or biophysics with significant expertise in several of the following areas: intraocular/intracranial surgery and microinjection procedures, microscopy and associated instrumentation (2-P, confocal, epifluorescence, electron microscopy, or preferably super-resolution imaging), assay development related to tissue histology/sample preparation/molecular labeling protocols, electron microscopy sample preparation (ultramicrotomy), viral vector transgenesis and/or electroporation, electrophysiological recording of neuronal activity by methods such as single-unit in vivo recording, whole-cell patch clamping, and 2-P functional imaging with voltage/calcium indicators, and programming using Python and Matlab.
Applications should be submitted as a single PDF file to Colenso Speer (email@example.com). Please include 1) a short cover letter outlining your research interests as they pertain to the position, 2) your curriculum vitae, and 3) contact information for three references.
